If you are considering training for a career as a CNA, certified nursing assistant, you likely have a personality that finds satisfaction in caring for the physical and emotional needs of others. Before you embark on CNA training for this career, it is important to look at your motivation and honestly ask yourself if you will be able to sustain enough patience and compassion for those your care for on a daily basis. If the answer is yes, then you have discovered the right career for you.
Advantages of Completing Nursing Assistant Programs Online
Learning online has some distinct advantages over learning in the classroom, with the chief one among them being convenience. If you already have another job, you may not be able to afford to quit or reduce your hours to complete programs in nursing assistance. Online learning gives you the opportunity to take the classes around your own schedule and still keep up with the other areas of your life like working, raising a family or both.
Look for Certification
Before enrolling in any nursing assistant program online, make sure that you are selecting a school that is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accredited Commission (NLNA). This is important if you ever decide to pursue further nursing classes beyond your CNA, because only schools and classes that are accredited by the NLNA are eligible for transfer to other colleges.
Classes You Can Complete Online
Although nursing is a hands-on career, you can obtain much of the required knowledge through online education. Some of the classes you will take include infection control, how to obtain vital statistics, anatomy and physiology, how to keep patients safe and more. When you come to the end of your coursework, you will be required to pass a CNA Certification test and this must be completed in person. Each state has its own requirements for the exam, and your online college should inform you of them and where you must go to complete your exam.
Completing Laboratory Assignments
Depending on the college you choose, you may be able to complete laboratory assignments virtually by interacting with an instructor online. Other colleges may require you to attend class on campus for this portion of your training. Be sure to inquire about this when you register, and make sure that you have the ability to attend class on campus if that is required.
