Do You Qualify For CNA Training?

With an aging baby boomer generation and a thriving health care industry, even in today’s economy, certified nursing assistants are having no trouble finding employment. Getting your CNA training online will allow you to break into the workforce or are thinking about making a career transition, you may find yourself wondering what it takes for CNA certification and if you qualify for CNA training.

What is required to be a successful CNA?

1. CNAs, especially those who work in skilled nursing facilities, perform the most hands-on patient care. They are responsible for washing, bathing, dressing, toileting and other activities of daily living that the patient can no longer perform unassisted. A CNA should be trustworthy, discrete and compassionate in order to make the patient comfortable and avoid embarrassment.

2. You will need to be physically able to perform CPR for an extended period of time, until doctors or emergency personnel arrive. You will also need to maintain CPR certification, attending additional sessions as required to keep your certification current.

3. As a CNA, you will have the most frequent contact with the patient. It will be your duty to observe and report back to nursing staff or doctors changes in patients’ vital signs or condition. A good certified nursing assistant has excellent attention to detail, good follow through and an understanding of medical terminology. You can expect to learn medical terminology during your training.

4. As patients are likely to ask CNAs their questions, you should be fluent in English and comfortable speaking to others. You should have plenty of patience, as well, as patients’ may repeat questions. You should also be quick and efficient in providing assistance, anticipating patients’ needs when possible.

5. You will need the ability to remain calm under pressure and even under dire circumstances. As a CNA, you may see things that will make you comfortable and even upset. Health care is often a matter of life and death. You will need to be able to remain professional at all times so that you are able to effectively cope with these situations.

6. When you acquire your CNA certification you will have the confidences and ability to think quickly and on their feet. You must make decisions and use common sense. You will also need to know when a problem is beyond the scope of your training and be willing to hand it over to someone with more extensive medical knowledge.
